M62: ‘Overturned van’ causes three miles of congestion

The van turned over on the M62 eastbound between junctions 11, the Birchwood Interchange, and 12, the Eccles Interchange, just after 8am with emergency services called to the scene.

Three out of four lanes were closed causing huge levels of congestion along the busy motorway.

A statement from National Highways North West said: “There is approximately three miles of congestion approaching the closure which is adding about half an hour to normal journey times.”

An eye witness who had been driving along the motorway that morning reported that a van had turned over and that emergency services were called.

But no serious injuries have been reported as a result of the incident and later that same morning National Highways[1] announced that all lanes had been reopened again.

National Highways North West announced just before 10.15am that all lanes were reopened and thanked drivers for their patience.

But drivers were warned to still expect some delays caused by traffic having been built up while the lanes were closed.

Members of the public who have witnessed what may be an accident on the roads have been encouraged to always call 999 as soon as it is safe to do so.
