M5 delays after serious lorry crash closes junction for eight hours

Motorists faced long delays on the M5 overnight and into this morning following a serious crash.[1] All three lanes on the northbound stretch between junction 6 and junction 5 were closed after a collision involving an overturned lorry.

The incident happened at around 11pm on Monday, December 5 and the area remained closed as of 6.50am today, December 6. Drivers were warned that two miles of traffic was building on approach to the scene.

Just after 11pm last night (December 5) a spokesperson for National Highways said: "The M5 in Worcestershire[2] is CLOSED northbound between J6 (Worcester) and J5 (Droitwich) due to a collision involving an overturned lorry. Emergency services, recovery and our Traffic Officers are en-route to scene."

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police[4] added at 12.04am on Wednesday, December 6: "The M5 is currently closed across all three lanes northbound between junction 6 to junction 5 due to a serious collision. A diversion has been put in place but drivers are advised to find alternative routes."

And at 6.50am, a spokesperson for National Highways West Midlands said: "The M5 in Worcestershire remains closed northbound between J6 (Worcester) and J5 (Droitwich). Recovery and barrier repairs are complete. The road is being gritted prior to reopening.

"There is approximately 2 miles of congestion approaching the closure." In response, one person shared on X, formerly Twitter: "This is causing significant traffic through Droitwich as everyone is re routed from j6 to j5. Something really should be done about this as it’s a regular issue for residents."
