M4 shut after crash causing huge delays

Part of the M4 near the Severn Bridge has been closed for more than eight hours after a serious crash in the early hours of Monday (December 4) morning.. Bristol Airport has warned passengers travelling there as the crash is affecting journey times.

The eastbound and westbound carriageways have been shut after a lorry collided with a car between junction 22 (M49) and junction 21 (M48) just before 5am. At 11am, Traffic Wales said there were 30 minute delays on the motorway heading eastbound from junction 23 Magor.

Emergency crews are on the scene and drivers should avoid the area. Avon and Somerset Police have said they are dealing with a "serious injury collision"

A Highways England spokesperson said: "The #M4 is CLOSED eastbound between J22 M49 and J21 M48 due to a multi vehicle collision. Emergency services are on scene. More info to follow." Delays are around an hour.

Motorists are being directed off the motorway at J22 to take the second exit onto the M49 southbound. Traffic[1] monitoring site Inrix says: "M4 eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident, a car and a lorry involved from J22 M49 to J21 M48.."
