Live: A38 shut as emergency services descend on ‘serious collision’

Emergency services have been called to a ‘serious collision’ on the A38. The incident has left the route shut near Branston with police saying the smash has taken place at Shobnall Bridge.

Meanwhile National Highways says collision investigators are on the scene with a diversion in place. Traffic monitoring system Inrix created the alert at around 8.10am.

It stated: “A38 Lichfield Road in both directions blocked, queueing traffic due to serious accident, a lorry involved between A5121 (Clay Mills) and A5121 (Branston Interchange). Closed through Burton between the two main junctions. Diversion – using the A5121 through Burton itself with Southbound following Hollow Circles and Northbound following Hollow Triangle signs.”

National Highways say it’s likely to be shut until the afternoon. A spokesperson said: “The A38 in Staffordshire is closed in both directions between the A5121 (north) and the A5121 (south) near Branston due to serious collision. Staffordshire Police remain in attendance to carry out collision investigations. National Highways contractors will be assisting with traffic management.” It is expected that the road will remain closed until this afternoon.”

Neighbourhood officers have urged motorists to avoid the area. A spokesperson for East Staffordshire Local Policing Team said: “We are dealing with a serious road traffic collision on the A38 at Shobnall Bridge. The road has been closed in both directions and is likely to be closed until later tonight. Please avoid the area if you can.”
