Huge tree falls in storm – blocking a road in Warrington

Residents are warning others to avoid Longbarn Lane where a large tree has fallen today, Wednesday.

The damage caused by the incident is not yet clear but access through the road is blocked.

This comes as it was reported by the Met Office this morning to expect strong winds as another storm[1] heads across the United Kingdom.

A yellow weather warning was issued for the north west with ‘a brief spell of very windy conditions’ likely to go through Wednesday evening and night, ‘bringing the chance of some disruption’.

The weather warning came with expectations of ‘some damage’ to buildings and roofs and delays in road, rail, air and ferry transport.

Advice given for staying safe during strong wind included:

1. Protecting your property from damage and other people from injury

Don’t risk injury to others or damage to your property. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them in high winds.

2. Things you can do before a journey

Windy weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous so plan your route, listen out for travel updates and pack essentials in your car.

3. Driving safely in strong wind

Driving in these conditions can be dangerous, for yourself and other road users. If you must drive, you can do this more safely by driving slowly to minimise impact of wind gusts.

Be aware of high sided vehicles and be cautious of overtaking them.

4. Avoiding injury if you’re out and about

Being outside in high winds makes you more vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees.
