Former ‘out of control’ dog is a ‘sweetie’ and is soon to be looking for a home
Cassie, the abandoned Akita, had a near miss and is soon to be put up for adoption after being rescued off the streets by a team of volunteers in Surrey. The fluffy pooch had to be carefully captured in a cage after she was spotted roaming around the streets just south of Dorking[1].
Surrey Police[2] were first called to reports of an out of control dog at Beare Green, with armed officers being initially deployed on December 1, 2023. After it was established that there was no risk from the dog, officers stood down.
Terrified and soaking wet, charity Lost Dog Recovery UK South[3] set up a trap, claiming they caught wind a local farmer was prepared to shoot the dog. Taking a gentle approach, they set up a cage with food inside, to slowly coax the dog inside.

She had moved to a half built extension at a residential address, so a second trap was set up with permission from the landowner. Heavy rain was forecast, and volunteers were worried the dog might have come to harm, however she appeared on the camera to be in the cage and had eaten all the food inside. The team assume it was her first meal in days.
A gentle giant and a real softie, Cassie was taken to warm kennels. She is currently under assessment at Dogs Walk This Way Rescue, who say she is a real sweetie and is walking wall on the lead. Cassie has been treated for fleas and is now microchipped by the shelter’s vet.
Once she has completed assessment, those interested in Cassie will be able to apply for adopting her. In the meantime, those who want to sponsor or donate to the shelter, can do so by visiting the website[4].
Currently, there are two dogs available for adoption on the website including, Jake, who is a large german shepherd cross breed who sadly has PTSD from being in shelter his whole life. They also have Kito, a white german shepherd, who loves cuddles.
After being successfully captured, Surrey Police said: “We are pleased to update that the dog which has been on the loose in the Beare Green area over the last few days has been found, and is currently being cared for volunteers from Lost Dog Recovery UK South.
“The dog was captured earlier today by volunteers from the charity which specialises in the capture of difficult to catch dogs. Although the dog, believed to be a Japanese Akita, had been sighted on a number of occasions, it ran off whenever anyone tried to approach it and remained on the loose.
“We were clear any police involvement was precautionary as we were responding to initial reports about a dog that may be out of control however we stressed there had been no reports of any injuries. We then worked closely with the dog warden and a local charity Lost Dogs Recovery UK South so the dog was secured responsibly.
“Although we had not received any reports that anyone had been injured, we were keen to locate the dog, with officers conducting various searches of the local woodland. We will continue to work with the team of amazing volunteers and the local dog warden to ensure the dog is cared for and identify its owner. Anyone with any information is asked to direct message us quoting ref PR/SYP-20231206-117.”
