‘E-scooter rider caught on M5 at 3am’ facing three charges in court

A man who allegedly rode an e-scooter along the M5 while two times the drink-drive limit is due to appear in court. Police said a man was stopped on the hard shoulder of the busy motorway at 3am.

The incident allegedly happened on the northbound carriageway, between junction 25 and junction 24, on Friday, December 29. A 29-year-old man has since been charged with driving under the influence.

He also faces charges of driving without insurance and for being a learner driver on a motorway. Posting a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, Avon and Somerset Roads Policing, said: "This rider was stopping riding their privately owner e-scooter on the motorway at 3am whilst twice the drink drive limit."

The post continued: "Rubbish visibility and weather. Arrested and charged for drink driving, no insurance, learner driver on a motorway. You couldn't write it!”

The man, from Somerset, has since been bailed. He is due to appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court on January 18, 2024.
