Cause of road closures in Leicester revealed

A man died after suffering a medical episode in a van in Leicester this morning, prompting roads to be closed. Leicestershire Police[1] announced at about 10.45am[2] the closure of Troon Way, as well as Barkby Thorpe Roundabout and Nicklaus Road, at the junction with Troon Way, which forms part of the outer ring road in the Rushey Mead[3] area.

It has now been revealed that a man in his 70s, who was unwell, had been found in a van parked in Troon Way, and East Midlands Ambulance Service[4] had responded to the call, prompting the police to shut the road. The closure of the busy route meant other roads were inaccessible until about 1.15pm, when they re-opened.

A spokeswoman for the police said this afternoon: “Officers were called at 10.28am today (Thursday) to a report of a man who was inside a parked van in Troon Way and was believed to be suffering a medical episode. East Midlands Ambulance Service were also at the scene and attended to the man.

“Sadly the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The man’s next of kin have been informed and support is being provided.

“At this stage, the cause of the man’s death is not believed to be suspicious. A file is being prepared for HM Coroner and identification is a matter for HM Coroner.”

The man’s death is not the only tragedy today. Another man died after a van he was driving crashed into a metal fence[6] in Kegworth in the early hours. Emergency services were called to Station Road in the village at around 4.45am.

The man, also in his 70s, had to be extricated from the van, a spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service[7] said. Leicestershire Police[8] said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
