A50 scenes of carnage as crane brought in after lorry sheds load of metal poles

This was the scenes of carnage after a lorry shed its load of metal poles on to the A50 in Staffordshire. A crane has had to be brought in to clear the dual carriageway.

The incident has resulted in the closure of the eastbound carriageway between Blythe Bridge[1] and the A522 in Uttoxeter[2]. National Highways say the metal posts were strewn across the carriageway and a diversion is now in place.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The A50 in Staffordshire is closed eastbound between the A521 (Blythe Bridge) and the A522 (Uttoxeter) to assist with recovering a shed load of metal posts that have been spread across the carriageway after a lorry lost its load.

“A crane is being sourced to assist at scene due to the size of the induvial metal posts. National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with road closure and traffic management.

“There are currently slight delays in the area. Traffic is being diverted via local routes.

“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

Meanwhile, traffic monitoring service Inrix says: “A50 Eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident and shed load of metal poles between A521 (Blythe Bridge Roundabout / Draycot, Blythe Bridge) and A522 (Uttoxeter / Upper Tean, Uttoxeter). Congestion to the Grindley Roundabout. Routes around Blythe Bridge, Draycott in the Moors and Tean are also congested as traffic seeks an altenative.

“A crane is on scene to assist with the clear up of the shed load. Affecting traffic heading away from Stoke-on-Trent towards Uttoxeter.”
