A48 at Tidenham latest after sticky goo closed main road after lorry hit bridge

After being closed for three whole days, a key stretch of road linking Wales and England is now able to be reopened. The A48 at Tidenham[1], between Lydney and Chepstow, will finally be passable following an incident on Friday evening when a lorry carrying a glucose-like substance hit a railway bridge, spilling its load.

The spillage proved a headache for highways team to clear and it also meant the road, which was closed throughout Saturday, Sunday and Monday, needed to be resurfaced. That resurfacing happened overnight Monday into Tuesday and the road is now able to open.

Gloucestershire County Council[2] said today (Tuesday, December 19) on X, formerly Twitter: "We’re pleased to advise that the overnight repair works on the A48 have gone as planned and the road will now be able to reopen to single lane traffic. The reason we are down to one lane is to make the Network Rail bridge safe."

The council added: "It needed to be reinforced with concrete blocks which have narrowed the carriageway. We want to extend our thanks to everyone for their patience while we completed this essential work associated with this truly unprecedented incident."

The highways team[5] added on X: "The A48 at Tidenham has been resurfaced overnight after a lorry collided with a rail bridge on Friday. A lane closure with temporary traffic lights has been installed and the road is planned to be reopened at 05.00 hrs."

The closure caused traffic woes for residents in nearby communities as traffic diverted. On Monday, police were sent to the location[6] as drivers were warned not to drive through the closure.
