‘You couldn’t make it up’ as train delayed because driver’s own train …

A council leader said you "couldn't make it up" after his train was delayed - because the driver's own train was late. Jason McLellan, Labour[1] Leader of Denbighshire[2] County Council, was at Chester station waiting for a Transport for Wales train.

But he posted on social media that he was facing his "first delay of the day". Transport for Wales has been under fire for delays and cancellations as its rollout of new stock has itself been hit by delays and snags.

North Wales has also been badly served in recent years by Avanti West Coast - with timetables cut.

On this occasion the councillor says passengers were told that the reason for the delay was that the driver was travelling to work at Chester by train - and this train had been delayed.

Another passengers told North Wales Live they were given a similar message at that station two weeks ago.

Cllr McLellan said: "First delay of the day, 20 mins in Chester, train driver late for work Was about to joke he must be getting the train to work, they just announced that is exactly why he is late. You couldn't make it up."

He tagged in Transport for Wales on his tweet.

They replied to X (formerly Twitter[5]) to apologise and said that refund claims can be made for delayed journeys.
