Welsh Government cutting speed limit on busy North Wales road

The Welsh Government is cutting the speed limit on a busy North Wales A-road to create a 20mph “buffer”. Wales introduced a 20mph default limit on most Welsh 30mph roads in September – a move that has divided the nation.

That was a national move but the Government this week put forward a traffic regulation to cut the speed on a particular stretch of the A5. The limit will change on a section between Llangollen[1] and the village of Berwyn – slightly less than a mile away.

It is currently national speed limit there – 60mph – but will go to 40mph.

Welsh Government said: “The introduction of the 40mph speed limit is intended to improve road safety by creating a buffer zone between the length of the A5 trunk road which is currently subject to a 60 mph national speed limit and the 20mph speed limit through the town of Llangollen.”

They added: “The effect of the Order is to introduce a 40 mph speed limit on the length of the A5 trunk road that extends from a point 231 metres east of the centre-point of its junction with the B5103 at Berwyn, west of Llangollen, Denbighshire[4] to a point 1,537 metres east of the centre-point of that junction.”

This opens the possibility of similar changes for many other roads where there are significant differences between two speed limits on a stretch of road. There are numerous villages on busy A-roads in North Wales where speed limits now go from 60mph to 20mph.

Welsh Government has responsibility for trunk roads like the A55[5], A5 and A470 while councils are responsible for other highways.
