Vernon Kay route through these Derbyshire villages on third day of …
BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay is set to run through even more of Derbyshire today as he gets closer to finishing his Ultra Ultra Marathon challenge for Children in Need. The broadcaster will be taking on marathons and ultramarathons across four days[1] to get him from Victoria Park in Leicester to Bolton Wanderers’ football stadium in his hometown.
A large portion of his 115-mile journey is in Derbyshire. On Tuesday, November 14, the broadcaster ran through Melbourne, Kings Newton and Chellaston before finishing at Moorways Sports Village in Derby. He covered around 27 miles on the first day.
On the second day, Vernon ran 40 miles through Duffield, Belper, Matlock, Rowsley and Bakewell before finishing at Hope for the night. In the first two days, the 49-year-old has raised around £1.2 million for Children in Need.
Day three includes the most elevation of any day as Vernon makes his way up and down Kinder Scout. He will set off in Hope, before making his way to Castleton and Edale – before ascending Kinder Scout.
From there he will leave the Peak District through Hayfield and make his way out of Derbyshire and into Greater Manchester, finishing day three at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester. He will have covered just over 30 miles.
Vernon’s journey has been broadcast live on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds, with video highlights and further coverage on Radio 2’s social channels. He has also been broadcasting his weekday morning show live while undertaking the challenge.
One Derby resident even got a shout-out from Vernon live on air. Vernon said: “I can’t remember his name, I feel really guilty, but a gentleman climbed the first hill in Derby with us who lost his leg to diabetes, but he came out for a quick walk and he was saying that this is going to help me tenfold. So I apologise to the gentleman whose name I have forgot, but what a trooper, running out.”
