Van bursts into flames after A47 crash with bus that had children on …

A crash between a school bus and a delivery van left the van in flames on Monday afternoon (November 27). The incident happened at around 4.35pm on the A47, at the junction with Black Drove in Guyhirn, leaving the van driver with minor injuries and the A47 closed between Thorney and Guyhirn.

The bus was carrying school children at the time, but none were injured. The East of England Ambulance Service attended but the van driver did not need hospital treatment.

A Cambridgeshire[1] Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “At 4.45pm on Monday, crews from Wisbech[2] and March[3] were called to a car fire following a road traffic collision on A47 between Thorney and Guyhirn.

“Firefighters arrived to find a collision between two vans and a bus. One of the vans subsequently caught fire, which then spread to the secondary van and bus.

“Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire before returning to their stations by 6.10pm. The bus was safely evacuated when the crews arrived. The cause of the fire was accidental.”

Police officers were called to the scene at 4.35pm and left at about 8pm, though Highways England remained and assessed the damage to the road. The A47 between Thorney and Guyhirn reopened just before 3am on Tuesday (November 28).

Temporary traffic lights were initially in position while repairs to the carriageway were carried out. These repairs were finished by 5am, and the traffic lights were removed.

An investigation has started into this collision and Cambridgeshire[6] Police have asked those with dashcam footage to call 101 and quote incident 310 of Monday.
