Trains via Leicester disrupted after person hit by train

Trains through Leicester and Loughborough have been delayed and some are cancelled after a person was hit by a train and died, on an East Midlands Railway[1] route. Services between London St Pancras and Sheffield, via Derby, will be affected until the end of the day, EMR said.

Emergency services were called to the railway line between Derby and Chesterfield this morning (November 16) where a person was hit by a train. The person, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

That stretch line remains closed while police continue an investigation[2] at the scene. It means some trains on the route, which usually travel through Loughborough[3] and Leicester[4], have been diverted and therefore are not stopping at either station or will delayed or cancelled.

EMR says the disruption is adding up to 40 minutes to journey times. Customers are being urged to check their journeys before they travel. Meanwhile, some ticket restrictions have been relaxed so Off-Peak or Super-Off-Peak ticketholders can travel during Peak times.

Those who wish not to travel today, due to the delays, can also use their tickets tomorrow. Find all the latest updates on today’s services on the East Midlands Railway website.

A spokesperson for the BTP said: “Officers were called to the line near Chesterfield at 9.41am today (16 November) to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers attended alongside paramedics, however, sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances leading up to their death.”
