Roadworks along the A165 corridors, which includes Freetown Way, Witham and Holderness Road, look set to begin next Autumn.
Hull City Council's[1] Cabinet approved works worth almost £3m for the route. Designs are due to be drawn up next month.
The improvements will focus on improving safety along the busy stretches of road. As part of the changes, Freetown Way is due to be converted back into a dual-carriageway.
Cllr Mark Ieronimo, the transport[2] portfolio holder, said: "Historically, this route has seen a number of incidents along its length. As a local highway authority, we have a statutory responsibility to reduce and prevent accidents.
"Today’s decision further demonstrates the council’s proactive approach to improving the road network in the city for the benefit of all road users and members of the travelling public. The A165 is an important part of the transport network to and from east Hull. When complete, this scheme will deliver wide ranging economic, environmental and road safety benefits."
The works are being funded through a £2.99m grant from the Government's Safer Roads Fund, which was announced in April[3]. A wider national investment programme, worth £47.5m, aims to prevent 750 deaths and serious injuries on the highest-risk roads.
Improvements on the A165 corridor are among 27 new projects, which include re-designing junctions, improving signage and road markings. Freetown Way is set to return to two lanes of traffic in each direction, and will have segregated, off-road cycle lanes.
