The Bath restaurant named one of the UK’s best ‘hidden gems’

A Bath steak house has made TripAdvisor’s list of the best ‘hidden gems’ in the UK. The Herd on Argyle Street came fourth on the list – a new category in the travel website’s series of awards.

While Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards generally showcase the mostpopularrestaurants, the category recognises “lesser-known spots and places locals love”. There is a global list, and one specifically for the UK.

The Herd[1] has an average rating of 4.5 on TripAdvisor and has been praised by customers as being “fabulous”, “stunningly tasty”, and “absolutely phenomenal”. It serves meat from just down the road in Devizes, Wiltshire.

On it’s website, the restaurant describes its offering to diners as: “Locally sourced meat of the finest provenance alongside a simple, seasonal menu in a family-run restaurant in the heart of the world heritage city.”

The steaks are high quality, and so unsurprisingly, not cheap. An 8oz prime fillet steak is £33.95, as is a 16oz t-bone steak or porterhouse. The 10oz sirloin is the cheapest steak on the menu, at £26.95.

On the menu, the restaurant writes: “All our steaks come from a local herd consisting of Aberdeen Angus & Hereford Crosses. Each piece of beef is hung until it reaches its optimum level of maturity, which is usually 21 to 28 days, before the steaks are perfectly prepared by our local butcher. We pride ourselves on provenance.”

Based on the business’ reviews, it’s well worth the price for those prepared to fork out. Jonathan wrote on TripAdvisor: “Wonderful place first time visit absolutely loved it – quality food, quality service our new favourite restaurant x”

Kay commented: “Loved this place and will definitely visit again. We wanted somewhere quirky with great food to take friends visiting us from the coast. We got exactly that! Service and atmosphere were wonderful.”

Mysteryshopper53 said the food was “stunningly tasty” and Lilo1913 wrote: “The best steak I have ever had. It was absolutely phenomenal.”

Top of the UK list of ‘hidden gems’ was Doncaster’s Spanish tapas restaurant, La Fiesta. It was praised by customers for its all you can eat tapas and great atmosphere.

The global list was topped by Green Point, in Cusco, Peru. It’s a plant-based culinary experience that TripAdvisor says “will impress vegans and meat eaters alike”.
