Storm Ciaran: Train line flooded as services expected to be …
Storm Ciaran[1] has flooded the train line heading towards Somerset this afternoon (November 2). Network Rail Western said the line between Taunton[2] and Plymouth is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.
A picture shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) shows flooding on the tracks at Hele, north of Exeter. Passengers have now been urged to check their journey details before travelling.
Network Rail Western said on X at 1.19pm: “Heavy rain from Storm Ciaran means the line between Taunton and Plymouth is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day. Please check with @nationalrailenq[3] before you travel.”
Two weather warnings from the Met Office remain in place across the South West. A yellow rain warning is in place until 11.59pm while the wind warning will come to an end at 5pm.
Storm Ciaran has already caused travel chaos across Somerset and the wider region today. A number of key A-roads are closed by flooding[4] while a serious crash between a car and a caravan[5] closed two lanes on the M5 near Burnham-on-Sea.
A number of schools have also been forced to close[6] across Somerset. A total of 10 schools are fully closed while two others are partially closed.
