Somerset cyclists bid to smash world record in charity spin-a-thon

A group of fundraisers are gearing up to smash the world record for the longest ever spin-a-thon - to raise cash for charity. A group of 29 people are taking up the challenge at the @Worle Centre to take part in the record breaking attempt to beat the longest ever static cycling[1] class this weekend.

The group will be aiming to smash the current Guinness World Record for the category which currently stands at 31 hours and four minutes. To break the record, a minimum of 10 active participants and one instructor must complete the continuous class and will all be spinning[2] throughout the night with just minimal breaks.

The record attempt will raise funds for Weston Hospicecare. The group are also inviting individuals to join them in their adventure[3] over three, six and nine hour slots.

One of the masterminds behind the operation and a trustee at the centre Paul Magor said: “Everyone here at @Worle relishes a challenge and this certainly will be one of the biggest challenges we have faced. There are still places available if people would like to spin[6] those wheels for Weston Hospicecare.”

Weston Hospicecare provides end-of-life care to people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Weston-super-Mare[7] and throughout North Somerset. Patients are cared for in the 10-bed Inpatient Unit as well as helping people in their own homes through a team of community nurses.

Weston Hospicecare[8] provides all its services free of charge to its patients and their families. It costs £5.5million every year to keep the hospice running and just 20% of that is provided by the government.

This means that community support through fundraising, volunteering and sales made in the charity’s[14] stores are vital to support the vital work of the hospice. Weston Hospicecare events fundraiser Rachael Amos said: “We are all so grateful to @Worle and everyone taking part for helping make such a difference to the work of Weston Hospicecare and hopefully getting into the record books too."
