Section of A46 closed in both directions after major incident

A section of the A46 in Warwickshire remains closed this morning (November 4). The road is shut in both directions after an incident ‘involving a pedestrian and a lorry’ shortly before 4am.

Emergency services are on scene and drivers are advised to ‘allow extra travel time if in the area’. A National Highways spokesperson said in a social media post at 3.45am:”The A46 in Warwickshire[1] is closed in both directions between the A435 and A422 due to a serious collision between a lorry and a pedestrian.

In an update, issued shortly before 5am, National Highways said the road was likely to be closed for several hours. A post on traffic information website Inrix said: “A46 in both directions closed due to serious accident, a lorry and a pedestrian involved from the A422 (Stratford Upon Avon) to A435 (Oversley Mill roundabout, Oversley Green). Traffic is coping well.”

It is the fourth major incident on that stretch of road in the last three weeks alone. Fresh calls to improve road safety on the ‘Stratford Stretch’[2] between the A422 for Stratford-upon-Avon[3] and the A435 for Alcester were made after a young man died in a collision there on Friday, October 13[4], in an unrelated incident.

Two more serious incidents were recorded on that section of road in the days that followed.
