Poundland opening four Somerset stores in two-week window …

Opening dates have been confirmed for four new Poundland[1] stores in Somerset – including two tomorrow (November 25). The retailer recently took over shop units formerly occupied by collapsed fashion firm M&Co[2] in Portishead, Crewkerne, Wells and Radstock[3].

The company – which has also taken over a number of shops which used to belong to Wilko – has now announced when these stores will be opening, with all coming across the space of a fortnight. The first two on Portishead[4] High Street and Market Street in Crewkerne[5] will have their ribbons cut tomorrow.

This will be followed the opening of its new Radstock[6] High Street store on December 2. A week later, Poundland will open its shop on the High Street in Wells[7].

It comes as part of plans to open dozens of new stores across the country before the end of this year. The retailer is set to open 86 stores over a three-month period, as things stand.

Austin Cooke, Poundland’s managing director, said: “We excitedly continue to open and relocate stores at pace so we can bring our best offer, including all-new clothing, chilled and frozen food to customers, existing and new. The monumental effort from our teams continues to amaze me, and it supports jobs and high streets right across Britain.

“That’s 86 stores in 70 days that we’ll have opened successfully, and no one should underestimate the effort and energy that our teams have put into delivering that achievement – I certainly don’t. It’s phenomenal.”
