Police officer was driving pick-up truck that struck young footballer
A COP was driving a pick-up truck that struck a footballer and left him fighting for his life in hospital, it has emerged.
Dean Watson, 24, was mowed down in the early hours as he walked along the B7076[1] near Ecclefechan, Dumfries[2] and Galloway.

The midfielder, who plays for Dalbeattie Star in the South of Scotland League, was hit by a black Mitsubishi[3] L200 on the country road around 1.30am on October 22.
He remains in a stable but critical condition in hospital[4].
Police Scotland[5] confirmed that a serving officer was behind the wheel of the pick-up that knocked him down.
After the serious crash, Dean was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in Dumfries before he was transferred to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow[6] for emergency treatment.

It is understood Dean suffered serious head injuries[7] in the collision.
Cops[8] launched a fresh appeal in a bid to track down the motorist of another vehicle that was driving along the B7076 around the time of the collision.
Officers are looking for a small, light-coloured car, which cops believe is possibly white.
Sergeant Colin Ramage, from road policing, said: “There is no suggestion that the vehicle we are trying to trace was involved in the crash, however we believe the driver may have information which could assist with our investigation.

“I am appealing directly to the driver of the light-coloured car which was travelling south on the B7076 in the minutes before the victim was struck around 1.30am to please come forward.
“Even if you think you have no information of significance, it is still crucial that we speak to you, as even the slightest detail could be important.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0290 of Sunday, 22 October, 2023.”
