Plymouth port getting upgrade to help ferry passengers
Plans for a new passenger boarding facility at the Millbay Ferry terminal in Plymouth have been proposed. The scheme will improve the ferry servicing facilities available and reconfigure vehicle parking and queuing lanes associated with the existing passenger and freight ferry services that operate at the Port of Plymouth.
The Passenger Boarding Bridge no longer adhered to regulatory requirements and has reached the end of its serviceable life, so passengers embarking and disembarking the vessel currently use the Link Span. The existing jetty at the Millbay[1] Ferry Terminal is not considered suitable to accommodate the proposed PBB design loads in its current state.
But under the new plans, the existing jetty will be modified through adding a new row of piles, installing concrete crosshead beams to join the pile heads in a row together and constructing a new deck on top. Associated British Ports (ABP) has now made a request for approval under Regulation 77 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 for the works.
ABP is embarking on a series of strategic infrastructure developments at Millbay to secure the long-term future of the ferry terminal, improve passenger experience, strengthen its freight capability as well as increase the port’s green credentials and grow the offer to the cruise market. Plymouth City Council[4] earlier this year made a decision to allocate £1,300,000 of Freeport Seed Capital Funding into the Capital Programme for the Millbay terminal development.
The overall aim of the scheme would mean Plymouth is set to see more ships, more cargo and more business – as well as more growth. Dock owners ABP have already begun a programme of work to make improvements to the passenger experience at the ferry terminal.
Plymouth City Council planners will determine the fate of all the new applications listed below at a later date. Below is the full latest list of planning applications that have been submitted this week.
