Plymouth court list: 22 men and women convicted in court this week
Mahatma Gandhi said that there was a “higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience – it supercedes all other courts”.
However, Gandhi was highly unlikely to ever be caught drink driving or in possession of class A drugs and thus when it comes down to the six-days-a-week work of those who administer justice at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court, nothing really supercedes it. Pleading ‘conscience’ is probably not going to be considered worthwhile mitigation either.
A case in point would be those who failed to comply with court orders which were passed in relation to offences they had already been convicted of. Those that chose not to comply – such as choosing not to carry out unpaid work or turn up to appointments with probation officers – ended up out of pocket.
Another person who chose to ignore a restraining order and harassed a woman was also given short shrift – and will have to give up 100 hours of their time in unpaid work. However, they have also been ordered to complete up to 30 days of a “Building better relationships programme” – which one would consider may include the observation that harassing the woman you are restrained from contacting will inevitably result in yet another court appearance, perhaps a fine, perhaps more unpaid work or even, perhaps, a term of imprisonment.
Meanwhile, one woman was nearly imprisoned for firstly failing to attend court as well as also stealing a £6.35 box of Cornetto ice creams. Fortunately for her, the jail term of four weeks was suspended.
