Pensioner killed in HGV lorry crash at garden centre

Police[1] have arrested a 30-year-old man from Southampton[2] on suspicion of causing death by careless driving in connection with the tragic incident, which happened on Wednesday.

Officers first received reports at around 11.10am that ‘a HGV lorry had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian at a garden centre’ on Mill Lane in Fareham[3].

Emergency services went to the scene without delay.

But sadly, the pensioner, a man in his 70’s from Fareham[6], was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

A force spokesperson said that his next of kin had been informed.

The Southampton man has since been released under investigation while officers continue to gather evidence.

Police are now launching an appeal for witnesses to find out what happened.

The constabulary spokesperson said: “Officers are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened, and they are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see what happened? Perhaps you have dash-cam footage in the moments leading up to the incident?

“If you think you have any information that may help our enquiries, no matter how small or insignificant you believe it to be, then please get in touch by calling 101, quoting 44230446638 or Op Specific.”
