Man dies in serious incident on M1

A man has died in a serious incident on the M1. Police were called to the northbound carriageway, near Shepshed[1] last night, at around 9.20pm, where the man - a pedestrian - and a car had collided.

Emergency services attended and the man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was subsequently closed between junctions 23 and 24 for around six hours as officers carried out enquiries.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police[2] said: "From enquiries conducted so far it’s believed the pedestrian was initially on a bridge on Butt Hole Lane in Shepshed, just after junction 23 of the M1 northbound. He was subsequently found on the carriageway where the white VW Touran collided with him."

Drivers were diverted away from the incident as the stretch of the motorway remained shut overnight. National Highways warned people travelling on the M1 that officers were still working at the scene at 2.30am today (Nov 18).

The road reopened at around 3.30am. The police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is continuing its investigation into the incident and is appealing for anyone who may have seen the man standing on the bridge or witnessed any part of the incident to come forward.

Anyone who was driving along the route is also asked to check the footage of any recording equipment they may have installed in their vehicles. Those with information should contact DC 4298 Maggie Langton on 101 or via www.leics.police.uk, quoting incident 704 of 17 November
