Inquests into the deaths of four teenagers killed in Eryri crash to open

The inquests into the four teenagers killed in a crash after their car left an Eryri road will open next week. The bodies of Jevon Hirst, Harvey Owen, Wilf Fitchett and Hugo Morris were recovered from a silver Ford Fiesta in Gwynedd[1] on Tuesday.

The car had been spotted by a lorry driver after an appeal had gone out to find their vehicle. They had been missing since Sunday morning after a camping trip in Eryri.

The car left the A4085 at Garreg, near Tremadog, and was partially submerged in water. There will be coroner led inquests held into their deaths.

These will open on Wednesday, November 29, at the Dafydd Orwig Chamber, Shirehall Street, Caernarfon. The formal opening will start at 10am.

Coroners record and investigate sudden, unexpected and violent deaths. The Senior Coroner for North Wales (West) covering Gwynedd and Anglesey[4], is Kate Robertson.

An inquest is an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a death or deaths. The purpose of the inquest is to find out who the deceased people were and how, when and where they died and to provide the details needed for the deaths to be registered.

The hearing next Wednesday will see the inquests opened but they will then be adjourned as the investigation into how they died is completed. Full inquests will then take place at a later date.

The coroner's court said the formal opening will take into the deaths of "Jevon Alexander Hirst – 16 years old, died A4085 Penrhyndeudraeth on 21/11/2023, Harvey Graham Owen – 17 years old, died A4085 Penrhyndeudraeth on 21/11/2023, Wilfred John Fitchett – 17 years old, died A4085 Penrhyndeudraeth on 21/11/2023 and Hugo Morris – 18 years old, died A4085 Penrhyndeudraeth on 21/11/2023".

Tributes have been paid to the four teenagers involved in the tragedy which has shocked the community of Shrewsbury where they are from and the Gwynedd communities where the crash took place.
