How long Storm Ciaran will last as Met Office issues multiple warnings

Storm Ciaran was arriving in the Midlands overnight as Met Office warnings for heavy rain[1] and strong winds were issued. The autumnal storm was making its way across the southern part of the UK overnight going into Thursday, November 2, with the Met Office[2] issuing multiple Yellow and Amber warnings.

There could be a chance of flooding, train cancellations and travel disruption[3] as the storm has been forecast to bring about heavy rain to parts of the West Midlands. Affected areas could include Wolverhampton, Stourport, South Staffordshire[4] and Shropshire. A Yellow warning for rain was first issued at 6pm yesterday, November 1, and it remains in place until 11.59pm tonight, November 2.

Ben Lukey, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Rain from the storm could also see significant surface water and river flooding across parts of the West, South and Northeast of England from later today until Friday, with minor impacts possible more widely on Saturday due to further showers. Environment Agency teams are out on the ground clearing any blocking debris from screens and watercourses, operating flood defence assets where required, working with partners and present in those communities that have experienced flooding, looking to minimise the impact on residents.”

Birmingham and large parts of the Black Country are set to miss out on the heavy rainfall, despite large parts of Britain being issued with weather warnings. The Met Office has issued the following warnings for areas affected by the storm:

  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services[7] are possible
  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life
