Horse with ‘serious injuries put down and rider in hospital after smash

A horse which suffered serious injuries in a car crash has been put down. Staffordshire[1] Police has confirmed the animal was ‘euthanised’ after it was hurt during a collision.

The rider of the horse fell off the animal moments before the smash. The horse was then involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Vectra, the force[2] said.

Part of the road had to be shut as emergency services dealt with the incident on Thursday, November 9. The horse rider was taken to hospital after being assessed by paramedics.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and has since been assisting officers with their enquiries. The incident took place on the A53 between Leek and Endon, StokeonTrentLive reports[5].

A Staffordshire Police[6] spokesman said: “We were called to the A53, between Leek and Endon, following reports of a collision involving a horse, a rider, and a car. Officers went to the scene with colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service[7].

“Further checks revealed that the rider of the horse was not involved in the collision. She had fallen off the horse prior to the collision. Sadly, the horse suffered serious injuries and was later euthanised.

“The rider of the horse, a woman in her 60s, was assessed at the scene and taken to hospital. The driver of the car stayed at the scene and has been helping officers with their enquiries.”

The incident closed part of the A53 from 9.30am. West Midlands Ambulance Service[8] said the horse rider was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital with ‘potentially serious injuries’.
