Essex Police slam ‘ridiculous’ motorists driving at 136mph on the M11

A driver was caught travelling at a "ridiculous" speed of 129mph on the M11 in Essex, right before a second was clocked at 136mph. The Essex Roads Policing Team had been conducting speed checks on the busy motorway this morning (November 20).

The team were conducting the checks in the Epping Forest District when one motorist driving a silver Ford clocked on their cameras at nearly 130mph, with the national speed limit being 70mph. The 126mph speed was clocked at 11.10am and the police said that if the car had crashed at that speed, it would "almost certainly be fatal".

Police have said that speed plays a "significant factor" in causing the majority of crashes on Essex roads and have slammed the motorist as "ridiculous" and said they will likely lose their licence. The team also said that shortly after the first speeder was caught, another drove by travelling even quicker.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the team said: "This ridiculous speed was recorded earlier on the #M11[3] (and at one point reaching 129!) The driver will have a day in court and likely be disqualified as a result. Speed, as part of the #Fatal4[4] is a significant factor in serious and fatal collisions which is why we enforce it.

"To pre-empt any 'but what about...' replies, or 'taxing the motorist' comments - a crash at this speed would almost certainly be fatal...As dedicated Traffic officers, we target such drivers to try and reduce the misery caused to so many families."

They added: "We barely had time to post this before another irresponsible driver was detected at 136 - madness."
