Cyclist taken to Newcastle RVI with leg injuries after crash with lorry …

A cyclist was taken to hospital after being injured in a collision with a lorry.

The crash took place on the southbound A19, near Killingworth[1], at around 9.30am on Friday. Emergency services arrived in the area and part of the road was closed.

It is believed the cyclist suffered a leg injury and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. Northumbria Police[2] remained on the scene while the road was closed.

A force spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9.30am today (Friday) police received a report of a collision on the A19[3] southbound, near Killingworth, involving a lorry and a cyclist. Officers and emergency services were in attendance and the cyclist is believed to have sustained a fracture to his femur.”

The road was closed at the Moor Farm roundabout and one lane of the northbound carriageway was also closed while emergency services were at the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area during that time. All lanes were reopened at around 11.30am.

The North East Ambulance Service[4] confirmed that a patient was taken to the RVI following the collision. A spokesperson added: “We received a call at 9.26am this morning (Friday, 10 November) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 southbound near Backworth.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew, two clinical team leaders, and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service who were later stood down. One patient was taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment.”
