Construction of 420 flats begins on site of former supermarket
A former supermarket in Liverpool city centre will be turned into a seven-story apartment building.
A building containing 420 student apartments will be constructed on the vacant Hondo supermarket site on Upper Duke Street. The supermarket closed down in 2017[1] after more than 30 years of business
The plans for the apartment building were approved in 2020 and construction has now begun on site. It is expected to be completed by June 2025, to be used for the September 2025 student intake.
Northern Irish construction firm McAleer & Rushe, which is currently working on a new build Maldron hotel on Park Lane, will undertake the project for Fusion Group.

As well as the flats, the building on Upper Duke Street will contain a recording studio, half a basketball court, fitness studio, library, zero waste shop, two private courtyards, a private dining area, outdoor bar and performance stage and an area for yoga, meditation and study.
