Busy Edinburgh street becomes parking ‘free for all’ ahead of …

A busy street in Edinburgh has become a 'free for all' for parking.

Since the new tram line to Newhaven has been completed, Elm Row and Leith[1] Walk opened again to traffic[2] after years of disruption.

However, locals have spotted the lack of parking restrictions around Elm Row with images showing cars parked up the street and on the pavement.

Across Elm Row, Edinbugh residents have reported that there are no parking restrictions in place as Edinburgh Council are still finalising parking provisions in the area. This has meant that parking appears to be free 24 hours a day.

Councillor Scott Arthur also revealed that there are plans to explore the idea of pedestrianising the area further as part of long-term plans for the city.

This comes after it was announced earlier this month that pavement parking will be made illegal in Edinburgh from January. It will make Edinburgh the first city in Scotland to implement the ban and drivers could face a £100 fine if they mount the kerb. Parking at dropped kerbs and double parking will also be banned, with an exemption for delivery drivers.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “Outstanding works on Elm Row are still being finalised following the completion of the tram line to Newhaven, including the parking provision.

"Longer term, we will be exploring further pedestrianisation in the area which will result in minor changes.”
