West Lothian canal path locked down again by bomb squad as …

A canal path in West Lothian[1] has been locked down by the bomb squad[2] after yet another 'suspect item' was found.

The A89[3] in Broxburn is currently closed after an item was found in the Union Canal near the busy road as the footpath is also closed in both directions with police in attendance.

Posting on social media shortly before 7pm on Sunday, October 22, Police Scotland informed locals to avoid the area as they say the device is being assessed by Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams.

They added: "The A89 in the Broxburn area is closed following a report of a suspect item being found in the Union Canal. The canal paths are also closed. Officers are at the scene & a cordon has been put in place.

"People are asked to avoid the area. EOD is attending to assess the item."

Earlier on Sunday, we reported how local magnet fisherman James Pearson discovered what he believes is a Second World War mortar in the canal near Harrison Park in Edinburgh.

Over the past few weeks, three different devices have been fished out of the water by magnet fishers, including one device which was transported to Cramond Beach by the bomb squad and detonated.

In all four circumstances, the same canal path was locked down by police and the bomb squad until each device was assessed - as a similar situation appears to be underway in West Lothian.

Police Scotland were approached for further comment on Sunday's ongoing incident.
