Tunbridge Wells council bosses put car park and offices on market
Tunbridge Wells Borough Council[1] bosses have put one of its town centre car parks along with offices up for sale. The Mount Pleasant Avenue Car Park in Tunbridge Wells[2] is being marketed, and as a separate property, the beautiful Grade II listed offices next to the police station.
The car park is described in the sales brochure as “prime 0.46 acres site” with “excellent redevelopment prospects”. The site has “potential alternative uses” subject to securing planning consent. Informal tenders are being invited for the freehold interest.
As KentLive reported in February[3], the council was reviewing its car parks, community centres and other sites for possible sale. The council scrutinises such assets for potential development or other ways of slimming down its portfolio of land and buildings.
The council has for many years had a list of sites and buildings in Tunbridge Wells[4] it either owns or leases which could be shed by the authority. The cabinet of the new council administration, called the Borough Partnership with Lib Dem leader Ben Chapelard, which took over from the Conservatives last May, agreed the updated asset list in February for the financial year starting on April 1.

The council also has an asset management plan, which informs how it approaches the sites it owns. The council’s property portfolio at the time was at nearly £103million.
On its updated asset list of nine sites or properties, was 9 – 10 Calverley Terrace which is on Crescent Road. This stunning building is now being marketed as offices for sale. The building was designed by architect Decimus Burton who is behind many lovely properties across Tunbridge Wells, including Calverley Park, Calverley Park Crescent and Hotel du Vin.
Again being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton, the brochure says of the offices which are next to Tunbridge Wells Police Station and opposite Hotel du Vin, this sale offers an “exciting development opportunity of a Decimus Burton building” in a “prominent town centre location” with a surface car park of around 30 spaces. It also describes it as a “desirable residential neighbourhood”. The site is around 0.23 acres. It is a freehold sale with vacant possession.
The offices used to be two homes, but now house open plan and individual offices, and meeting rooms. You can see the particulars for the car park, on Rightmove being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton[7], here. And you can see the brochure for Calverley Terrace here[8].
