Tragedy as man dies after being hit by a train near Chester-le-Street …

A man has sadly died after being hit by a train near a County Durham[1] railway station.

At 6am this morning, officers from the British Transport Police were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Chester le Street Railway Station.

Officers attended and a man was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

  • A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the tracks near Chester le Street Railway Station at 6am today (30 October), following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

    “Sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been prepared for the coroner.”

    Following the incident the railway line was closed in both directions, causing disruption to services between Newcastle and Darlington. The track has since reopened however some trains may still be delayed or cancelled.

    National Rail reports that rail replacement buses are in operation between Newcastle and Darlington. Further information and updates can be found here[4].
