Thousands across Essex call for ‘immediate general election’

Hundreds of people across Essex have backed a petition calling for an ‘immediate’ UK general election. A petition to Parliament has been signed by more than 180,000 people across the UK.

In Essex it has been signed by almost 4,000 people as of 10am on Saturday, October 7. This includes 351 in Colchester, 342 in the Chelmsford[1] constituency and 307 in Rochford and Southend East

Elsewhere in the county it has been signed by 291 people in Harwich and North Essex, 287 in Saffron Waldon, 268 in Southend[2] West, 261 in Rayleigh and Wickford, 220 in Brentwood and Ongar and 218 in Braintree. It has also received 198 signatures in Maldon, 193 in Epping Forest, 190 in Basildon and Billericay, 174 in Harlow, 164 in South Basildon and East Thurrock, 159 in Castle Point, 145 in Clacton and 139 in Thurrock.

The petition, which can be viewed here[5], states: “The Prime Minister should call an immediate general election to allow the British public to have their say on how we are governed, we should not be made to wait until January 2025. Consistent opinion polling has shown the British public have lost confidence in the current government.

“The NHS is in crisis, the asylum system is broken, there are delays at the ports, and institutions are failing. The British people should be given a say on what to do next.”

The Government responds to all petitions that achieve more than 10,000 signatures. Any petition on Parliament’s website that receives more than 100,000 signatures is considered for debate.
