Rush-hour chaos in city as cars crash on main road
A main Birmingham[1] road was brought to a standstill after a rush-hour crash led to emergency services attending the scene. The crash took place on the A41 Highgate Road in Highgate[2] to the south east of the city centre, near Belgrave Middleway, shortly before 5pm on Wednesday (October 18).
Two cars collided on the street close to the Birmingham ring road. West Midlands Ambulance Service[3] sent an ambulance and paramedic officer to the scene.
A spokesman for the service said: “We received a call at 4.56pm to reports of a two-car road traffic collision. Three occupants of vehicles were being assessed by paramedics.”
West Midlands Roads, Transport for West Midlands traffic updates service, said the crash took place at the junction of Highgate Road and Moseley[5] Road and was causing ‘major disruption’. It said the road was blocked for large vehicles.
Cars were able to get past the crash site ‘slowly’ but traffic was building up in the area. National Express West Midlands said its 8a and 8C bus services were using Highgate Middleway and Stratford Road instead of Highgate Road. While its 50 service would be using Haden Way in both directions.
It said: “Allow more time for your journey. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.” West Midlands Fire Service[6] said it sent two crews from Highgate to make the vehicles safe and left the matter with the police.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police[7] said: “We are at the scene of a collision in Highgate Road, Birmingham supporting the fire and ambulance services. No injuries have been reported.”
