Road closed for five months while railway bridge is demolished and …
Railway works will mean a roads headache for drivers in south Leicestershire. A rural road between two villages is now closed and will stay shiut for five months while a bridge is demolished and rebuilt.
Works will be required until March next year while a bridge is demolished and rebuilt at a higher level. Motorists are being warned that a section of Newton Road between Fleckney and Wigston[1] needs to be closed until next spring while the bridge near Newtown Harcourt is demolished and rebuilt.
The closure, up to the Glen Road junction, came into force on Saturday evening (October 14) and traffic is being diverted through Newton Harcourt. This is being done to allow the installation of overhead wires as part of the electrification of the Midland Mainline route between Kettering and Wigston.
Upgrades which are meant to create a cleaner, electrified railway line for passengers in the region. A separate bridge on Wistow Road that also sits on the line, will have similar work done to it, with the road closed since May.[3][4]
Network Rail has apologised for the inconvenience the closure will cause.
