Police drone catches driver who fled van after failing to stop
Lincolnshire Police[1] released drone footage of the moment they were able to capture a man who had failed to stop for officers. The thermal image in the footage shows officers being guided towards the 31-year-old who had tried to hide in a bushed area near Crofton Close, Lincoln[2].
Ashley Howitt, of Jellicoe Avenue, Lincoln, was arrested and taken into custody. Officers could smell alcohol on his breath and he refused to provide a specimen of breath. Howitt also damaged a cell during his time in custody.
He was charged with failing to stop, failing to provide a breath test and causing damage to the cell. He pleaded guilty to the offences at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 27 where he was disqualified from driving for three years, fined £150, and ordered to pay compensation of £50 with £370 costs.
Poll – Should the general sale of fireworks be banned?[3]
A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “Keeping our roads safe and reducing the number of people who are seriously injured or killed will always be a focus for our officers. The man had failed to stop for police and fled from his van. He was located using the thermal image of our drone and officers were guided in to arrest him.”
