Police close M60 motorway after ‘person falls from bridge’ with air ambulance scrambled

Police closed the M60 on Monday evening (October 2) after a person fell from a bridge, the Manchester Evening News understands.

Emergency services, including paramedics and motorway cops, attended the scene of the incident beside J23 for Ashton-under-Lyne shortly before 5pm.

There were delays of over an hour[1] initially with miles of congestion, as all lanes were closed by police. Traffic was being held within the closure as emergency services dealt with the incident. An air ambulance also appeared to have attended the scene.

Further details on the condition of the person involved have not been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police or the North West Ambulance Service, however it is understood a person fell from a bridge.

Congestion building on the M60 at rush hour

Highways North West confirmed all lanes were shut in both directions following the incident with diversions being put in place. Police also warned people to 'avoid the area'.

A public statement shared by National Highways read: "Please be aware, we're reporting delays of at least 60 minutes in both directions approaching the M60 incident within J23. The closures are likely to remain in place for an extended period of time whilst the North West Motorway Police conduct their investigations at scene."

As a post by Greater Manchester Police during the incident said: "Please be aware of road closures and delays within the area of Manchester Road, AUL and M60 Motorway (junc 23), whilst emergency services deal with an incident. Avoid the area if possible and consider other routes."

Two lanes later reopened on the clockwise carriageway, with almost hour-long delays remaining as of 6pm, however the anti-clockwise carriageway remained completely closed for investigation work.
