Petition for traffic lights on Burton ‘danger road’ where teenage boy …

A petition has been launched calling for road safety measures where a 13-year-old boy died in a tragic lorry collision. Hussein Quig-Diop was cycling to school when the crash happened at the B&Q roundabout, in Burton, earlier this month.

And now parent Daniella Marie has set up the petition on Change.org - and is calling on highways chiefs to take action. She said her daughter currently walks to school on the same route Hussein was taking when he died.

The roundabout - which links Shobnall Road to Wellington Road and Wellington Street - is among Burton's busiest. Dozens of lorries navigate it every day to get into town or join the A38, alongside a host of commuter and school run traffic. At the time of writing, Daniella's petition had attracted 198 signatures three less than its the target of 200.

Daniella said: “I live on Hawkins Lane in Burton and it’s really dangerous. The amount of school kids that cross that road, when there's oncoming traffic in both directions. My daughter has just started walking to and from school on her own and I meet her on Hawkins Lane and cross with her because I’m so worried about something happening.

Hussein Quig-Diop. Hussein Quig-Diop.

“Also the tragedy that happened with young Hussein the other week is an absolute nightmare. There is no crossing, there are no lights, no nothing - something needs to be done in both areas."

Hussein died from 'multiple serious injuries' after the accident, which happened at Burton's B&Q roundabout as he was cycling to John Taylor Free School, in Tatenhill. A GoFundMe page[3] has been set up to help with Hussein's funeral costs and has raised over £25,000.

On Monday, councillors held a minute's silence in memory of Hussein, with Mayor Syed Hussain paying tribute. He said: “It is with great sadness that I share the news of the untimely passing of Quig-Diop Hussein, the beloved son of Roy and Kimberley.

“He was a cherished older brother of Yussuf and Raymon and held a special place in the hearts of his friends and family. I’m sure the whole chamber will unite in expressing our condolences and offering our support to the family.”
