Pedestrian fighting for life after city hit-and-run on main road

A pedestrian has been left with life-threatening injuries after a suspected hit-and-run incident on a major Birmingham[1] road. The man in his 50s has suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a vehicle on the A4540 Boulton Middleway, part of the Birmingham city centre[2] ring road.

The collision took place close to the Jewellery Quarter[3], with man believed to have been walking there near to the Key Hill Circus roundabout at around 5.30am on Saturday (October 21).

West Midlands Police[4] received the call just after 5.30am and along with staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service[5] rushed to the scene. They found a man who had been hit by a vehicle with ‘life-threatening head injuries’.

The driver involved did not stop. The man was taken to the city’s major trauma centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital[7] in Edgbaston[8], where he is in a critical condition.

Now the West Midlands force is appealing for any witnesses or the driver of the vehicle involved to come forward. A spokesman for the police said: “We’re appealing for witnesses after a man in his fifties was left with life-threatening head injuries after being struck by a vehicle which didn’t stop in Birmingham.

“We are in the early stages of our enquiry but we believe the man suffered injuries following a collision with a vehicle which didn’t stop at the scene.”

DS Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, “At this stage we believe the man has received his injuries after being struck by a vehicle which hasn’t stopped. It is likely the vehicle would have been travelling towards the general direction of the Jewellery Quarter and the collision would have occurred just before Key Hill Circus.

“This is a busy stretch of road and I know from CCTV that a number of vehicles passed the scene or stopped and I need the occupants of those vehicles to get in touch as you may hold key evidence to help us put together the events from last night. Anyone with CCTV of the area or dashcam should contact us.

“I would also appeal direct to the driver of the vehicle involved. I need you to come forward and tell me what happened last night. The man is in a critical condition and his loved ones deserve answers. Now is the time to do the right thing.”
