New traffic arrangments to be trialled in Rhondda
New traffic arrangements are being trialled in Rhondda this week, the council has confirmed. From Thursday, October 5, the current closure at Pentwyn Road – related to the Maindy Road bridge scheme in Ton Pentre – will be lifted, with control measures on Bailey Street (8am-6pm weekdays) to allow through-traffic for local journeys to Cwmparc, Treorchy Comprehensive School[1] and Bwlch Mountain.
Repairs to a bridge at Maindy Road in Ton Pentre began on Monday, July 24 and caused heavy traffic on the B4233, according to local residents and businesses.[2] But the council says that the scheme is progressing well and is three weeks ahead of schedule – estimated to be completed by late November 2023, depending on the weather[3].
RCT Council said it has closely monitored the situation and has explored options to improve traffic flow, which included adjusting the Stag Square lights and altering waste collection times, and further improvement measures will be trialled. But the changes from Thursday can be reversed if traffic does not respond as expected.

The new measures include a manually-controlled Stop/Go system on the northern end of Bailey Street, at the Maindy Crescent junction, and towards the southern end of Bailey Street. It also includes two small areas of on-street parking at Bailey Street – near Augusta Street – being brought out of use by a temporary single yellow line, a traffic marshal located near Ton Pentre Junior School, at key morning and afternoon periods, and a traffic marshals located at the entrances to Augusta Street and Crawshay Street.
Outside of the weekday work hours – before 8am and after 6pm each day – the traffic management will revert back to the current night-time and early morning arrangements, meaning Pentwyn Road will be open with no additional measures at Bailey Street. Weekend arrangements will continue as before, with Pentwyn Road closed between 8am and 5pm.
However, the council strongly advises that other motorists continue to travel via the A4058, as it will enable traffic flow through Bailey Street, and the wider communities, to operate under the best conditions. Large vehicles like HGVs are also advised to use the A4058.
Residents are also advised that Wales & West Utilities are taking the opportunity to undertake a major gas main upgrade while the bridge works are being progressed under the road closure at Maindy Road. For the latest Rhondda news, sign up to our newsletter here[6].
