New Merseyrail train ‘taken out of service’ after crash at station

One of Merseyrail[1]'s new fleet of trains has crashed at a railway station, forcing it to be taken out of service.

The incident happened at Rock Ferry train station[2] in Wirral[3] on Thursday morning (October 5). A picture of the train at Rock Ferry shows damage to the front bumper.

Merseyrail have since confirmed the crash happened following a "minor operational incident" and the train was "taken out of service". They added that no passengers were onboard the train when the crash happened and no-one involved was injured.

Stephen Dodd, Chief Operating Officer for Merseyrail[6], said: "There was a minor operational incident this morning at Rock Ferry that has required a train to be taken out of service. No passengers were on board the train when this incident occurred, no-one involved was injured and resulting disruption to the Wirral line has been minor."

The long-awaited roll-out of the new fleet of Class 777 Merseyrail trains[7] finally got underway at the end of January after years of delays and setbacks. The Kirkby line was the first to see the introduction of the new trains with Ormskirk following earlier this year.

New trains have since appeared on the Wirral lines. The trains are a £500m investment into the Merseyrail service as part of the Metro Mayor’s aims to create a London style transport system across Merseyside with improved accessibility and Wi-Fi.

However the rollout has not been smooth with the new trains repeatedly running into issues.[8]
