National Highways reveals time M2 will fully reopen days after lorry fire

Highways bosses have revealed when the M2 is set to fully reopen days after a huge lorry fire. The carriageway near Strood was badly damaged by the blaze on Wednesday evening (October 25), which left the lorry a burned out wreck[1].

Two lanes of the M2 London-bound remain closed this morning (October 27) and there is congestion to Junction 3 for Chatham[2]/Rochester[3]. The repairs are being carried out on the motorway near Junction 2 for the A228 Sundridge Hill (Strood/Rochester).

Traffic[4] is queueing because it is down to one lane. However, National Highways has now given an update on when the lane closures will be lifted.

A National Highways spokesperson told KentLive: “Resurfacing work was carried out last night (October 26). A full closure was lifted and lane three opened so that traffic can pass the scene.

“Lanes one and two on the M2 remain closed for safety due to damaged bridge parapets. Further work to place concrete blocks to protect the bridge parapet will be completed this evening, with all three running lanes sure to reopen in the early hours of Saturday morning.”

“A hard shoulder closure will remain in place until competition of permanent repairs,” the spokesperson added. National Highways previously said the fire had caused significant damage to the road.

Following the blaze, two people had to be treated for injuries which were “not believed to be serious”, a Kent Police spokesperson said. You can keep up-to-date with the latest updates on the M2 closure and traffic with our live blog here[7].
