‘Multiple’ M5 crashes in Storm Babet force overnight lane closures in …
Drivers on the M5 have been warned of lane closures and speed restrictions overnight following “multiple” crashes. There are reports of heavy delays on the northbound carriageway between junctions 14 and 13 following an earlier collision[1].
Motorists have been warned that lane three closures are in place as well as speed restrictions due to the bad weather from Storm Babet[2] and crashes. In a tweet posted just before 10pm, National Highways’ South West team said there were delays of 60 minutes as a result and traffic was being held.
Following this, another message from National Highways[3] says traffic had been released. However the the lane closure in lane three remained in place and the hour-long delays were also ongoing.
The closures are likely to remain place overnight and into the morning. Roads traffic monitoring service, Inrix reports: “M5 northbound blocked, stationary traffic due to accident from J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield) to J13 A419 (Stroud).”
An earlier traffic alert from National Highways said: “Drivers in Gloucestershire are advised that lane closures and speed restrictions have been put in place on a section of the M5. The lane three closures and speed restrictions are in place between junctions 13 (Stroudwater interchange) and 14 (Falfield interchange) due to the bad weather in the area and following multiple collisions.
“These lane closures are likely to remain in place overnight and into the morning. There are delays of around 30 minutes and congestion of three miles in the area.”
