Mother and daughter killed in Storm Babet crash
A mother and daughter have been named as the victims of a fatal crash on the M4 after a lorry overturned amid high winds and rain brought by Storm Babet.
Wiltshire Police have formally identified Cheryl Woods, 61, and her daughter Sarha Smith, 40, of Caerphilly, South Wales, following their deaths as a result of a collision on Friday.
The M4 was closed in both directions between Bath and Chippenham, junctions 17 and 18, shortly after 9am after a HGV overturned.
The cause of the crash is unclear but it was linked to Storm Babet as it happened during high winds and rain. Four cars were involved in the collision and a number of people suffered minor injuries.
Mrs Woods was described as a “loving mother” and “doting grandmother” who prioritised her family’s well-being over her own, while her daughter, a mother-of-six was said to have a “radiant presence” in a tribute issued by relatives.
A lorry overturned amid high winds and rainIn a statement released through the police, the family said: “Cheryl Woods, cherished by those in her life, fulfilled the roles of a loving mother, doting grandmother, cherished sister, and a dear friend.
“Her selflessness was a defining trait, consistently prioritising her family’s well-being over her own, and she took immense pride in her Welsh heritage while nurturing a deep love for nature.
“Sarha Smith, in the footsteps of her mother, unselfishly devoted herself to her family’s needs ahead of her own. She was not only a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, but her absence leaves a void for those who relied on her radiant presence.
“Her legacy lives on through her six daughters, who will forever hold her memory close and strive to honour her with their efforts.”
