Man who died in horror lorry crash named as tributes pour in

A man who died in a horror lorry crash has been named by police as Southport man Malcolm Houghton.

Cumbria Police were called to the A590 on Thursday, October 12, following reports two articulated large goods vehicles had crashed[1]. Officers attended the scene, a short distance from junction 36 of the M6 motorway[2] and confirmed one of the drivers had died from his injuries.

Malcolm Houghton, 58, has now been named by Cumbria Police as the lorry driver who died. The driver of the other vehicle involved was uninjured.

Northbound vehicles had been diverted from the M6 that morning due to an earlier vehicle fire north of junction 36. The road remained closed until late afternoon whilst a forensic examination was carried out and the two vehicles recovered.

A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for witnesses who have been travelling north along the M6 from Burton services and were diverted or used junction 36 around the time of the collision, especially if your vehicle has a dashcam as this may have captured footage of the vehicles involved even if the driver did not witness the collision.

“Even if you are unsure, please save any footage and contact Cumbria Police on 101 quoting log number 26 of 12 October and ask to speak to PC 2414 Brockbank or the serious collision investigation unit.”

Tributes have now been paid to the Southport[5] man, following news of his death. Peter Williams wrote: “RIP Mally.” Steph Thomson wrote: “Condolences to Mr Houghton’s family and friends. RIP.”

Vivienne Mckee wrote: “God bless him and his family.”
