Man rescued from Looe flood in giant bin

A man has been rescued from floods in Cornwall this evening in what appears to be a giant blue bin. Video shared with CornwallLive shows Looe’s Fore Street severely flooded and resembling a river.

Looe is not the only place to be hit with Mevagissey’s The Ship Inn seeing fish swim around customers’ feet. There are currently twelve flood warnings in place for Cornwall, and nine flood alerts, with Looe having one flood warning and two flood alerts.[1][2][3][4]

The woman who filmed the rescue said high tide was at 6pm and as of 9.30pm it had “calmed down slightly”. The video shows a man appearing from an alleyway between restaurant Peking Garden and the Co-op store with four people waiting to help him.

The man then clambers into the large blue bin and is manoeuvred to safety. You can watch the video at the top of this article.

The Environment Agency has a warning in place for South Cornwall Coast from Gribbin Head to Rame Head until Monday, October 30.

It states: “Flooding is expected on all high tides from pm Saturday 28 – am Monday 30 October. High spring tides combined with a large tidal surge will result in significantly high water levels during this period. Levels forecast for evening tides Saturday & Sunday are of particular concern. Waves combined with Force 5-7 winds may exacerbate any flooding.

“High water at Plymouth is 18:16 Sat, 05:39 & 17:57 Sun & 06:18 Mon, local time. Time of high water will vary along the coast. Flooding may occur up to 2 hours either side of high tides. Expect tides ~500mm higher than predicted due to weather[8] conditions.

“Moderate waves & spray are likely. Take care near the coast. There may be standing water on roads. Do not drive through flood water or waves. Tidal gates at Polperro are closed. Fowey[9] Fore Street, Town Quay, Albert Quay & Caffa Mill Car park, Lostwithiel[10] Quay Street & Recreation ground, Polperro Harbour & Quay Rd, The Quay at Looe & the B3247 at Seaton are particularly at risk.

“Conditions should ease for high tide Monday pm. We are monitoring the situation. Please check online for updates. Flood warning area: Gribbin Head to Rame Head including Fowey, Golant, Lostwithiel, Lerryn, Polruan, Polperro, Looe and the Looe Rivers and Seaton.”
